Why do my Appearance settings change and/or appear to reset when I change my desktop picture?

Question Revised: 20 Feb 2001
Some users have reported that when they change their desktop picture via DeskPicChangerCMPlugin,
their system Variation color changes/resets to Lavender (see the Appearance tab of the
Appearance control panel). I have experienced this behavior myself. I don't believe any other
setting changes.
Unfortunately, I see no public means to deal with the Variation color information. It appears Apple
has not provided a public/blessed means to manipulate (get/set) it. I see nothing in the C/C++
Appearance Manager API's (Universal Headers 3.4), and I see nothing in the Appearance control panel's
AppleScript dictionary. Highlight color is there, Variation is not. I probably could hack around
and find this information out, but I'd prefer to avoid that, since I'm sure Mac OS X will not support
it.
As of this writing, I do not know exactly what the problem is: some 3rd party corruption, some
OS bug, something I'm doing. I don't know. My source code is out, and I believe this is the
"correct" way to do things, but who knows what quirks lie.... I'm looking into it. If you experience
this behavior, please contact me so I may obtain
some information from you in hopes of trying to squash this bug. Thanx.
