General CMPlugin Questions

  1. Do these contextual menu plugins work in Mac OS X?

    Relevant Version: 1.x

    Question Re-revised: 5 March 2011

The 1.x versions of the plugins do not work under Mac OS X. The 2.x versions (released 4 April 2005) do work under Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later.

The 2.x version only works through Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). In Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), Apple radically changed the architecture for contextual menus (abandoning the old mechanism, adopting and expanding the Services architecture). A new product, HsoiContextualServices has been released at version 3.0, which works in Snow Leopard. Note as well, this product is now under the care of a new company, Hsoi Enterprises LLC.

  2. Why do my Appearance settings change and/or appear to reset when I change my desktop picture?

    Question Revised: 20 Feb 2001

Some users have reported that when they change their desktop picture via DeskPicChangerCMPlugin, their system Variation color changes/resets to Lavender (see the Appearance tab of the Appearance control panel). I have experienced this behavior myself. I don't believe any other setting changes.

Unfortunately, I see no public means to deal with the Variation color information. It appears Apple has not provided a public/blessed means to manipulate (get/set) it. I see nothing in the C/C++ Appearance Manager API's (Universal Headers 3.4), and I see nothing in the Appearance control panel's AppleScript dictionary. Highlight color is there, Variation is not. I probably could hack around and find this information out, but I'd prefer to avoid that, since I'm sure Mac OS X will not support it.

As of this writing, I do not know exactly what the problem is: some 3rd party corruption, some OS bug, something I'm doing. I don't know. My source code is out, and I believe this is the "correct" way to do things, but who knows what quirks lie.... I'm looking into it. If you experience this behavior, please contact me so I may obtain some information from you in hopes of trying to squash this bug. Thanx.

Currently, no it does not. I do intend to bring it over to Mac OS X one of these days (using the OS's built in screensaver support), maybe use some OpenGL. We'll see. I've even thought about converting it to an iTunes visual plugin, but who knows... all depends who has the time and energy. :-)
